We met for the first time in high school when Jeff was 15 and Amanda was 14. Jeff thought Amanda was the prettiest girl with the sharpest wit. Amanda was impressed by Jeff’s cool guy confidence and sense of humour.
We started going on dates at romantic places like Subway, McDonald’s, and the local library. Not before long, we were head over heels for one another, sending angsty songs about love and whispering on the phone until 3 in the morning.
But as you would expect from a teenage romance, we went our separate ways after high school. We both moved away - Jeff to Toronto and Amanda to England.
But they say you never forget your first love, and that couldn’t have been truer for us. No matter the time and distance apart, we couldn’t shake the feeling that what we had was more than just a high school romance. We tried to remain in each others lives, keeping in touch over the phone and whenever we were both back home in Edmonton.
Eventually Amanda moved to Toronto for work and after a year we found our way back to each other. Six years later in New York (the site of a very dramatic school trip), Jeff asked Amanda to marry him and she said yes.
